Unanimous Decision
These paintings were originally part of an exhibition titled “Unanimous Decision,” which was featured at the Clark County Winchester Gallery from November 19th, 2013 – January 10th, 2014.
The title for the exhibit was chosen long before the paintings were even stretched. In my mind, I saw this exhibition and the paintings I would make for it as a way to address some of the major political and social news that has been happening in the recent past - Syria, Obamacare, the Government Shutdown, Assad, Filibusters, Drone Strikes, Snowden, the NSA, and all the other subjects that are discussed on the news ad nauseam. I wanted to artistically comment on the topics in our culture that are far from being “Unanimous Decisions.” However, that’s not how the exhibit evolved…
Unanimous Decision is based on a series of photographs taken during early morning walks at the Clark County Wetlands Park. I can often be found at the Wetlands Park right before sunrise, strolling through the park and mentally clearing my head for the day. I was inspired by the thick, lush, interwoven flora and light effects created by the rising sun. The entangled branches and leaves of the numerous plant species found at the Wetlands Park motivated me to paint expressionistically, and create a body of work that emulates the density and natural beauty of the park. In the end, the “Unanimous Decision” of the exhibit refers to the filtering process I went through in regards to the subject for this series of paintings.
